Background

Who Is Matthew Rhys?

Matthew Rhys is a Welsh actor who spent two decades being very good in American television before the industry decided, in one night, to give him the whole shelf. Born in Cardiff in 1974 into a Welsh-speaking family, he trained at RADA and turned up in British film and theatre through the early 2000s, then crossed to the United States for Brothers & Sisters, where he played Kevin Walker for five seasons.

The part that changed the shape of his career was Philip Jennings in The Americans, FX’s Cold War drama about two KGB officers living as an ordinary suburban couple. He played it for six seasons opposite Keri Russell, who became his partner off screen, and won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for the final season in 2018. HBO’s Perry Mason followed, a grimmer reworking of the character as a broke Los Angeles investigator in the 1930s.

Then came 2026. Widow’s Bay, Katie Dippold’s horror comedy for Apple TV, cast him as the mayor of a cursed island town trying to run a tourism campaign against the supernatural. The Beast in Me, a Netflix limited series opposite Claire Danes, cast him as a developer who may have murdered his wife. At the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 14, 2026 he won for both, becoming the first performer to take two lead acting Emmys on a single night, and the first to hold lead Emmys in drama, comedy and limited series.

Off camera he lives in New York City with Russell and their son, born in 2016, whom he is raising in Welsh. He also owns and charters a restored wooden sailing boat in New York harbour, which is either a midlife project or the most committed piece of character research in the business, depending on which interview you read.
