Background

Marc Márquez is one of the most successful motorcycle racers of all time, and in 2026 he is chasing a tenth world title. Born on February 17, 1993, in Cervera, in the Catalan province of Lleida, he won the 125cc title in 2010 and the Moto2 title in 2012 before stepping up to MotoGP with Repsol Honda in 2013. He won the championship as a rookie, aged 20, the youngest premier-class champion in history, and added further crowns in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

His career then stalled. A broken right arm at Jerez in July 2020 led to several operations and almost three difficult seasons on a Honda that was no longer competitive. Márquez chose to end his contract early, joined the satellite Gresini Ducati team for 2024, won three Grands Prix there and earned a seat in the factory Ducati Lenovo Team for 2025. The comeback was complete that year: 11 Grand Prix wins and a seventh MotoGP title, clinched at Motegi, which equalled Valentino Rossi’s total in the top class. A crash in Indonesia a week later fractured his right shoulder and ended his season early.

2026 has been harder. Márquez retired from the season opener in Thailand, then fractured the fifth metatarsal of his right foot in the sprint at Le Mans in May. He was operated on in Madrid, also had a procedure on his shoulder, and missed the French and Catalan Grands Prix. He returned at Mugello with fifth place, signed a two-year extension with Ducati on June 23 for 2027 and 2028, then won in Hungary and the Czech Republic to get back into the title fight against Aprilia’s Jorge Martín and Marco Bezzecchi.

He heads to the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang (October 30 to November 1) with 365 points, 10 ahead of Martín, who fractured his right wrist in the Australian sprint, and 50 ahead of Bezzecchi. The Australian Grand Prix itself was cancelled because of heavy rain, with Márquez on pole. After Malaysia come Qatar, Portugal and the Valencia finale, with 148 points still available in total. Off the track, Márquez lives in Madrid with his partner Gemma Pinto; his younger brother Álex, a Gresini Ducati rider and the 2025 runner-up, is also on the MotoGP grid.
